Now, we dive deeper into another setting: <span class=\"fabric-editor-annotation\" data-mark-type=\"annotation\" data-mark-annotation-type=\"inlineComment\" data-id=\"07d1dcf7-3fcb-4656-9e56-c2902979a926\" data-prosemirror-content-type=\"mark\" data-prosemirror-mark-name=\"annotation\">duration <\/span>and also discuss when you should have different <span class=\"fabric-editor-annotation\" data-mark-type=\"annotation\" data-mark-annotation-type=\"inlineComment\" data-id=\"07d1dcf7-3fcb-4656-9e56-c2902979a926\" data-prosemirror-content-type=\"mark\" data-prosemirror-node-block=\"true\" data-pm-slice=\"1 1 []\">Duration<\/h3>\n<p data-prosemirror-content-type=\"node\" data-prosemirror-node-name=\"paragraph\" data-prosemirror-node-block=\"true\" data-pm-slice=\"1 1 []\">The frequency resolution will be inverse of the duration (frequency resolution = 1\/duration), in other words, if we have a duration of 1 s, the distance between two points in the FFT will be 1 Hz away from each other, and if you have a duration of 2 s, the distance between two points in the FFT will be 1\/2 Hz from each other.<\/p>\n<p data-prosemirror-content-type=\"node\" data-prosemirror-node-name=\"paragraph\" data-prosemirror-node-block=\"true\"><span class=\"fabric-editor-annotation\" data-mark-type=\"annotation\" of varying duration, we constructed synthetic data with a rotational speed of 58.4 Hz and vibrations from the electrical network at 60 Hz, including harmonics.<\/span><\/p>\n<p know that the first peak is two that have merged and the double peak is also two that have almost merged.<\/p>\n<p data-prosemirror-content-type=\"node\" data-prosemirror-node-name=\"paragraph\" data-prosemirror-node-block=\"true\">\u00a0<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-7690 aligncenter\" We also observe that the signals stand out more from the noise, as the peaks become sharper with a longer duration.<\/p>\n<h3 data-prosemirror-content-type=\"node\" data-prosemirror-node-name=\"heading\" data-prosemirror-node-block=\"true\" data-pm-slice=\"1 1 []\">Connection between Duration and Sample Rate<\/h3>\n<p data-prosemirror-content-type=\"node\" data-prosemirror-node-name=\"paragraph\" data-prosemirror-node-block=\"true\" data-pm-slice=\"1 1 []\">Many sensors have made a connection between duration and sample rate. This is to make sure users can not have high sample rates and duration at the same time since that would require significant memory for the sensor and deplete the battery faster. This usually means that if you increase the duration you will lower the sample rate thereby keeping the number of data points in the measurement constant.<\/p>\n<h3 data-prosemirror-content-type=\"node\" data-prosemirror-node-name=\"heading\" data-prosemirror-node-block=\"true\" data-pm-slice=\"1 1 []\">Changing Duration and Sample Rate<\/h3>\n<p data-prosemirror-content-type=\"node\" data-prosemirror-node-name=\"paragraph\" data-prosemirror-node-block=\"true\" data-pm-slice=\"1 1 []\">If you compare <span class=\"fabric-editor-annotation\" data-mark-type=\"annotation\" data-mark-annotation-type=\"inlineComment\" data-id=\"d2cf2a9e-3ae9-4b3f-89a1-e2c1fda73917\" data-prosemirror-content-type=\"mark\" data-prosemirror-mark-name=\"annotation\">the different spectrums<\/span> <span class=\"fabric-editor-annotation\" data-mark-type=\"annotation\" data-mark-annotation-type=\"inlineComment\" data-id=\"d2cf2a9e-3ae9-4b3f-89a1-e2c1fda73917\" data-prosemirror-content-type=\"mark\" data-prosemirror-mark-name=\"annotation\">from both this article and last week&#8217;s <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vikinganalytics.se\/how-does-the-sample-rate-affect-the-data\/\" data-prosemirror-content-type=\"mark\" data-prosemirror-mark-name=\"link\"><span class=\"fabric-editor-annotation\" data-mark-type=\"annotation\" data-mark-annotation-type=\"inlineComment\" data-id=\"d2cf2a9e-3ae9-4b3f-89a1-e2c1fda73917\" data-prosemirror-content-type=\"mark\" data-prosemirror-mark-name=\"annotation\">article<\/span> <\/a><\/span>you see that the picture you get of the machine vibrations is quite different, even though this is the same signal behind. This means that you cannot compare signals with different sample rates and durations. Therefore, it is important to set up these settings right from the beginning to avoid neglecting large amounts of data gathered, should you later change settings after discovering they were initially incorrect.<\/p>\n<p data-prosemirror-content-type=\"node\" data-prosemirror-node-name=\"paragraph\" data-prosemirror-node-block=\"true\"><span class=\"fabric-editor-annotation\" data-mark-type=\"annotation\" data-mark-annotation-type=\"inlineComment\" data-id=\"8d431820-98de-4f94-9648-57f2ffe17836\" data-prosemirror-content-type=\"mark\" data-prosemirror-mark-name=\"annotation\">Trends will also be invalid for comparison across different sample rates, effectively negating the purpose of saving historical data for future reference.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 data-prosemirror-content-type=\"node\" data-prosemirror-node-name=\"heading\" data-prosemirror-node-block=\"true\" data-pm-slice=\"1 1 []\">Conclusions<\/h3>\n<p data-prosemirror-content-type=\"node\" data-prosemirror-node-name=\"paragraph\" data-prosemirror-node-block=\"true\" data-pm-slice=\"1 3 []\">Duration and Sample rate <span class=\"fabric-editor-annotation\" data-mark-type=\"annotation\" data-mark-annotation-type=\"inlineComment\" data-id=\"907714ae-7035-42be-ad49-1fdb15755b65\" data-prosemirror-content-type=\"mark\" data-prosemirror-mark-name=\"annotation\">are<\/span> two of the most central settings in vibrational monitoring and it is crucial to get them right from the beginning to not have to change them and discard historical data.<\/p>\n<p data-prosemirror-content-type=\"node\" data-prosemirror-node-name=\"paragraph\" data-prosemirror-node-block=\"true\">To be able to set them right it is important to answer a few questions<\/p>\n<ol class=\"ak-ol\" start=\"1\" data-prosemirror-content-type=\"node\" data-prosemirror-node-name=\"orderedList\" data-prosemirror-node-block=\"true\">\n<li data-prosemirror-content-type=\"node\" data-prosemirror-node-name=\"listItem\" data-prosemirror-node-block=\"true\">\n<p data-prosemirror-content-type=\"node\" data-prosemirror-node-name=\"paragraph\" data-prosemirror-node-block=\"true\"><span class=\"fabric-editor-annotation\" data-mark-type=\"annotation\" data-mark-annotation-type=\"inlineComment\" data-id=\"6f79f4e8-681e-4640-8d50-9a82996bd7bf\" data-prosemirror-content-type=\"mark\" data-prosemirror-mark-name=\"annotation\">What is the expected rotational speed?<\/span> If it is low or close to the <span class=\"fabric-editor-annotation\" data-mark-type=\"annotation\" data-mark-annotation-type=\"inlineComment\" data-id=\"fea61737-1667-4a70-8086-c3fccea9f154\" data-prosemirror-content-type=\"mark\" data-prosemirror-mark-name=\"annotation\">electrical<\/span> frequency, a longer duration is important, if it is high and far from the electricity grid frequency, a longer duration is not important.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-prosemirror-content-type=\"node\" data-prosemirror-node-name=\"listItem\" data-prosemirror-node-block=\"true\">\n<p data-prosemirror-content-type=\"node\" data-prosemirror-node-name=\"paragraph\" data-prosemirror-node-block=\"true\">What are the most likely failures I want to keep track of?
